Description

The Peasants overdrive is my nod to the early 90s Nashville style dirt box. This circuit is known for its warm, amp-like distortion with prominent bass response. It works fantastic with single coil guitars, but a humbucker works quite well too. It features the same Samsung MC4558S opamps , Philips BC264D input Jfet, K222E Jfets, K222E Jfets, and 2SC2362G NPN BJT transistors found in the early 90s version of pedal that go for tons of money.

The Drive control determines the amount of gain at the first gain stage. This stage is a fairly full range boost that mimics the input of an amplifier as it is fed by a Jfet impedance converter/buffer without an input cap. The gain stage features feedback clipping but immediately hits hard clipping diodes. This mix of soft and hard clipping imparts a unique overdrive character that you can find in the other common green distortion box.

The spectrum control is also quite unique in that it determines both the amount of highs and lower mids. This circuit features a transistor based gyrator focused around the 300 Hz band.

Finally the Level control determines the overall output of the pedal. When used in conjunction with the Drive control you can set this pedal up as a clean boost or a pretty creamy distortion with every shade in between.

It is important to note that this pedal is buffered bypass and features a silent switching bypass that is ideal for driving long cable runs and preventing treble loss. I found the bypass setup in this pedal is actually quite important to retaining the sound of the original design thanks to the Jfet switching.
